How to | Make Friends in a New City

If you're looking to move to a new city where you don't know a soul, there are a variety of ways for you to make new friends! For myself, I knew I would need to make some friends ASAP. If I didn't have any friends in Boston, I knew I wouldn't last. My experience thus far would not have been as pleasant.

But how do you meet people?

While I was preparing to move, a lot of people had told me about Meetup. If you don't know what Meetup is, it is a site where people make groups to create events for people to go to and meet new friends. The best thing about it is that everyone knows you're there looking for a new friend / friend group because they are also looking for a new friend. There are also groups based on interests that you can attend. For example, if you're into photography, you can find groups for fellow photographers and meet people in your niche.

I highly recommend Meetup if you're looking for a way to meet new friends. If you're going to a big enough city, there are so many groups to join.

Other places you can make friends: work, bus stops, Starbucks / Dunkin Donuts.. you can make friends anywhere if you really try. I've met some great people at work - I mean, you're with them 40+ hours a day, it's impossible to not get to know them and become friends. I made a friend at my bus stop last year because it was pouring down rain and my friend was kind enough to share her umbrella with me. I haven't made friends with anyone at a Starbucks yet, but maybe one day.

What do you do to make new friends? Have you tried Meetup?
